Technical Information

All my traditional photographs are taken on 35 mm film, with my original two Olympus OM10's. I generally use 400 ASA film (Tri-X) uprated to 800 ASA, because I like to see the grain in an image. I use tungsten lighting when in the studio, as I like to see what I am going to get, and inexperienced models always feel more comfortable without flashguns going off in their faces. I usually use 80-210 mm, 135 mm, 50 mm, 35 mm and 24 mm lenses. I print my pictures onto variable contrast fibre-based paper, using a diffuser enlarger. I don't mess around with my prints very much - some dodging and burning, toning and retouching are the only manipulations. They are meant to be fairly pure representations. If you would like to know any more, then just get in touch.

The quality of the reproductions on this page is only partially representative of the actual prints. Images are stored in JPEG format at a medium compression setting. Highlight detail is often lost in the scanning process, but in general no digital manipulation is carried out apart from removing dust marks, and balancing the tones to match the original print as well as possible. The original prints are, of course, of much higher quality, and larger reproductions can be provided to people interested in purchasing prints.

Digital photographs were formerly taken with a Fujifilm 3 megapixel camera. I generally leave these photos in colour, although sometimes they are changed to black and white. Digital (inkjet) prints are available of these images, although obviously fine art prints are not. More recent photographs are taken with a Canon 8 megapixel digital SLR. Many of these pictures are originated in monochrome, and larger prints are available from these images.

Monitor Calibration - For best viewing of my photographs, adjust your monitor so you can see clearly all eleven shades of grey, and the darkest one is indistinguishable from the background.
